Possibly cool: the city is here for you to use, a bi-weekly events newsletter focussed on Vancouver. (via.)

Savage Eden

Interesting aside in the Straight's Koyaanisqatsi preview / Philip Glass interview:

[H]e's [likely] going to spend another year working on Reggio's next film, which is still in the planning stages.

"It's going to be called Savage Eden, and Godfrey wants to make the subject matter what he calls 'the two isms' of today," Glass reports. "And this is where Godfrey is really head and shoulders above everybody else. He gets it down to two things: consumerism and fundamentalism. He says, 'These are the two forces driving the world, and this is what is happening.' It's a very radical way of thinking, and yet at the same time, we can see it. You see it every minute that you look at the news."

I just hope someone keeps Reggio away from the digital filters and effects - for me, Naqoyqatsi really suffered from an overuse of processing.

Just because

Just because it played randomly today and I was reminded of just how insane and great it is: Promises Kept, by Sonny Sharrock. I love how the musicians collectively and individually pretty much lose their minds.

Road Trip!

Oh man, I so want to see this. Although honestly - "Minimalist Jukebox" is such a strange name for a performance of a piece called "Hallucination City" (for 100 electric guitars); minimalism certainly isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Mr. Branca.

Duuuuude

Dude, right on:

"Dude indexes a stance of cool solidarity, a stance which is especially valuable for young men as they navigate cultural discourses of young masculinity".
